The return to 1990s minimalist fashion
I must say, on one level i'm almost embarrassed to have written that paragraph.Five items only?It sounds so uncomplicated, so almostdumb surely there was more than that in the 500plus shows that took place in four weeks of bitter weather, in march? There was but then again, i seem to have forgotten it.When something so reductive and understandable comes along, that sweeping change is Louis Vuitton the one thing that matters. This is so clear, and so unusually timed at the turn of a decade. These are the months when we suddenly ditched short, tight busy dresses and every kind of grotesque shoe and overcomplicated bag, and walked towards slick, sophisticated separates and strippeddown accessories.Lady gaga always excepted, the age of extremes is over.An era of cool classicism begins here.

It was elating to witness restraint taking over from brash bodyexposure at the winter shows, to see clothes that could be integrated into a wardrobe rather than onewear partyfrocks and to recognise myself in them, literally. These at first sight, anyway were the kinds of clothes i lived in in the 1990s, when i dressed pretty much exclusively in helmut lang, martin margiela, jil sander and ann demeulemeester. Then, it boiled down to a welltailored pair of black trousers, a tailored crombiestyle coat and countless white shirts and tshirts. Those were the last days of stealth powerdressing, a time of intelligent clothes that made you feel sharp and sorted, and that going to work was fun.As i watched all of this being reevaluated and endorsed by phoebe philo at cline, by stella mccartney, by hannah macgibbon at chlo(With a 1970s spin), and by Riccardo Tisci, I was inwardly cheering.I already own most of this, i thought. This was going to be so easy when i got home!

As a critic, one should always be disciplined enough to take oneself out of the equation. It's no good jumping around enthusing about the emergence of any particular style just because it happens to be an ideal fit for your mind as well as your body. You need to check what other women are thinking to make sure you're not going nuts over something that isn't going to materialise.

The truth is that fashion editors are surprisingly difficult to shift in what they buy and wear, rather than what they write or show in photographs.

Ordinarily, Louis Vuitton Bags Outlet what's there on the catwalk passes us by as kind of speculative carnival of fantasy all very lovely, or entertaining(Or not), but rarely something we scramble to put into action ourselves. You need only observe audiencebehaviour to see this:Take a few notes, snap a few outfits on the iphone, yawn, pass the sweets, gaze at neighbours, charge for the exit. This disconnect, this distance from the visceral emotion that really stirs a professional woman's buying instincts has been going on so long, we're inured to it.But this time the traction was visible, real. The frontline practitioners of fashion were already taking it personally.

The cline show in a tennis club on the outskirts of paris was proof. It was a staggering sight to walk in there. So many women were pouring through the doors wearing the camel coats, the pinkishcaramel tuxedo jackets, wideleg 1970s trousers, the crisp shirts, leather tshirts and swinging the plain classic box bag phoebe philo had designed for her first show and prespring collection, it practically looked like a cline convention. The bellwethers of fashion, the insiders, the young and the middleaged Pandora Bracelets alike, had bought into it.All anyone wanted to see was this 37yearold mother of two young children keep up what she'd started filling the void with the things that had gone missing from fashion when it entered its decadelong, accelerating mania for cocktail and redcarpet dressing.

But there was a tension, too, as the philophiles took their seats, fidgeted and looked sideways at each others' clothes. In a quiet corner of the minds of seasoned editors there was a dread. All too often, designers in philo's position, who has already triggered a mass of followers(A single camel coat she showed in her spring precollection has launched a deluge of beige)Will take fright and go off in another direction, distracted by the pressure to stay ahead. All that audience was craving was for philo to concentrate and keep her nerve. And she did, following through with slim peacoats, narrow trousers, cream silk buttonedup blouses and neat skirts, with almost nothing above the knee(A first sight of the new midi length that has gained strength ever since). These were classy, slightly frenchaccented day clothes for a working life we can identify with;Separates(Not outfits)To switch around.Clothes to answer needs that can only be understood from an interior knowledge of how you're going to live in them which is why none of it had the patronising suity look of 'careerwear'(A category no male designer has deigned to tackle since helmut lang left the scene).

Every memorable show i've ever been to generates a unique emotion.I can only guess Louis Vuitton at the delirium at christian dior's 1947 show, when he lowered hemlines and brought back femininity in one swish of a circle skirt. But i do know exactly what it felt like to see alexander mcqueen force change with his bumster trousers in 1996:Shocking, frightening, excitingly inevitable. And this one, in a much quieter way, had an impact of the same order:A thrill mixed with reassurance a feeling that a new purpose is in sight and everything's going to be ok again.Philo had chosen her resonances, all right. That tennis club was the last place helmut lang, the herocreator of the 1990s minimalist working uniform, showed before abandoning fashion in 2005, leaving a generation of followers in their thirties, forties and fifties(Me among them)Lost for a pair of wellcut black trousers and a seasonless mannish coat.

Shows Ralph Lauren Polo Sale over, it was straight back to london and into the depths of my wardrobe(Well, ok, bin bags in the attic)To turn out all my retired pieces.

The 1990s are back, hooray, hurrah!Minimalism i know how to do this one!But when i started pulling things out my ann demeulemeester chicgrunge long black velvet skirt, my surviving narrow trousers, overcoats, peacoat and vests by helmut lang, comme des garons shirts and tshirts, a viktor rolf wideleg tuxedo suit and frillfront shirt, and a couple of pairs of tom ford for gucci kittenheel shoes i started to realise that you've got to be careful, going back. Some things Pandora Charms survive, but some don't.Proportions have changed. There are small but crucial differences in the ways things are worn now that you don't necessarily spot right away. This look, retooled for 2010, depends on the minutest detail of trouserleg width and rise, what you put on your legs and feet, what degree of slouch or drape there might be in a top, how you do your hair.'Pared down' is the fashion clich for it but there's far more involved than plain undecorated clothes.

The point is, when you're making choices of minute degree, a miss is as good as a total embarrassment.Thinking, say, you can simply revert to carrying a sad old 1994 prada black nylon handbag or pair of elastic boots(Remember them? )Is almost as bad as misinterpreting 'going back to the 1980s' as a free pass to pull out a nolan miller shoulderpadded lam print dress from 1984 and wear it with a princess of wales flickyfringe hairdo.

What still works?Triumphantly, my 10yearold viktor rolf wideleg flares do, because they're stiff and go over the shoe.Any lycrastretch bootcut pants, and the helmut lang boycut trousers, on the other hand, have gone all wrong, hideous by today's standards. (I am instead eyeing the new lowerwaisted versions in gap's premium trouser range. )The collection of tshirts, though probably of vintage value by now, had to go back into storage because in the 1990s they were cut short and tight and what you need now is a long, drapy blouse.

I have not worn anything i'd categorise as a blouse in my life.Like all good minimalist sisters, i was a shirthoarder in the 1990s.And though some of the mancut shirts are good again(Thrills when i found a preppy pinstripe ralph lauren), what we need right now is something slinky, silky or floppy in the crpedechinetype way, to tuck into higherwaisted trousers or a longer skirt(I've found just the thing from the row. )

Talking of longer skirts, the floorlength velvet Ralph Lauren demeulemeester is a trophypiece par excellence, but now i'm wearing it in the 2010 way, with a martin margiela tailored jacket, which(I know this sounds affected, but here goes, it's a new and chic tic)I will sometimes put on balanced over my shoulders.I ordered richard nicoll's grey flannel long dayskirt the minute i saw it on his runway. But what's missing is a midi.

Where to go for the graceful midcalf skirt?Might just have to be cline. But there's more. The way to put these things together has subtly shifted.

Accessories are different.I can't actually remember what we did for bags in the 1990s, but i know what i want now:A leather delvaux envelope day clutch, because it is restrained and featureless, isn't a shoulderbag(Which would ruin a shoulderline), and might fit the iPad I'm thinking of buying.

Shoewise and legwise things are not a 1990s repeat, either.Squinting at how things were styled on the runway, it began to sink in that black opaques were gone a point so worth noting. It's time for sheer black tights and superfine fishnets again they make silhouettes look different, somehow.Time to acquire new habits then;Time to move on, not to look back. The beauty of it, though? This fashion experiment is on a level that won't expose any of us to ridicule. These clothes, these small new adjustments, are Louis Vuitton calculated to bring back dignity for women.Fashionwise, at least, i think the grownup woman is set fair for a good run.
